All my life I have struggled with organisation and deadlines, whether it’s completing an important project or remembering to take the rubbish out in time for the dustbin collection, it’s something I never thought I’d ever get over. However, recently I stumbled across a Reddit post which briefly mentioning about an app, Habitica, that helps you keep track of your day to day tasks as well as your to-do lists whilst making it feel like you’re playing an RPG in real life. As someone who always seems to forget to do the little day to day things or pushes projects back and back and never actually completes them, I thought I’d give it a try. You feel somewhat stupid setting up your day to day tasks (dailies) as you put down things that seem obvious such as brushing your teeth or making sure you shower etc. but honestly it helps a lot. When you’re really bad with your time management and it feels like time flies by when you’re sat playing the latest instalment of Dishonored or feeding your addiction with some PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds then listing down your simple tasks is really helpful. It’s somewhat complicated in the way it works if you’re not familiar with RPG games so if you’re interested in the mechanics of the game I found a helpful article that will help you get a grasp on what this app actually does.

I’ve only been using this app for about 6 days and it’s going superbly so far, I feel like I’m managing my time well and finally getting around to completing some personal projects that I’ve always wanted to do but never seemed to have the time for. There’s still a long way to go but this app is really helping out a lot with my time management skills and cutting out bad habits that I wish to eventually get rid of.

Maybe because I’ve played plenty of ‘grindy’ RPG’s in my time, levelling up and earning gold for doing things you actually want to do and tasks that will better your life feels great and is super addicting, I honestly can’t wait to complete this post so I can tick it off my to-do list and earn some of that sweet, sweet exp and gold! If you’re anything like me, you will find it hard to start off your journey because great, you’ve set up your tasks but where do you start? Well, I found an article on the official Habitica wiki that should be able to help you out! You can obviously cheat with a game like this by simply ticking things off when you haven’t even but what you need to understand that this app, this game, is actually a part of your life and if you’re cheating on the app, you’re only cheating yourself in real life and you’ll be the real loser in the end. So please, if the post has inspired you to play along, DO NOT CHEAT!

One negative thing I will say about Habitica is that they have a guild feature, which obviously goes hand in hand with any RPG game but you end up socializing with the people in your guild, which necessarily isn’t a bad thing, but I don’t really think it works in a game like this as it takes up the free time in your day which should be spent on completing your tasks. The feature is great to meet new people but I find, for now at least, it will only get in the way of my progression, maybe one day the legendary Dweeberz guild will be formed.

Overall my experience so far with this app has been great, I’ve finally joined the gym, quit out almost all junk food (baby steps!) and finally getting on with some personal projects I have been meaning to do for months! So, if you’re reading this because you’re surfing the internet and procrastinating on something that you should really be doing, don’t do the task, download Habitica first (Android and IOS) AND then do the task you’ve been meaning to do, don’t exp waste, duh.

PS: Completing this task just earned me 9 exp and 1.5 gold, hell yeah!
